My Venus Fly Trap Is Flowering. I Think.
Posted by Jeff Awesome in Interior Design on April 22nd, 2010
Ok so you know I said a while ago that I had moved into my new house and me and my house mate were thinking of getting some kind of flowers or plants to help decorate the house. Well a kind friend got us a small Venus Flytrap for our moving in party (which was amazing by the way). After the initial amazement of anyone that came over putting things in the traps to make them close up, it eventually started to look as if it was dying a bit. The flytraps were losing colour and a lot were completely dead. I was about to give up and pronounce it too far gone when tit started growing a shoot straight up the middle.
I’ve been looking out for it since and now the shoot is about 15 cm’s high and looks as if it going to flower! I didn’t even know they flowered so I’ve been looking up on Wikipedia (obviously) and it seems that most people stop the flowering because the traps die when its trying to flower. So it seems I’m too late to stop it now though, so I’m guessing that I will just have to let it flower properly, watch the traps die and then eventually it will start the cycle again yes?
Does anyone have any tips of things I should or shouldn’t be doing to make it grow properly?
This is what mine looks like now, except the traps aren’t as good and its in a pot…
Cartoon Houses

The extent some people will go to to prove they are the number one fan of something is really quite amazing sometimes. Some people even go and build replica houses of their favourite cartoon! I’ve seen various attempts at them before, I think I remember an amazingly garish Barbie house that looked like a big pile of pink vomit. Most have been awful or just had a little bit of themed furniture in them but I found one today that looks AMAZING!
I present to you the real life Simpsons House!
From the outside it looks absolutely spot on but then you go inside and you just get blown away! the wonky sailing boat picture is hung against the garish bright pink walls and even the sofas pretty much bang on.
The kitchen furniture is perfect as well, the bright coloured cabinets and blue and yellow chequered floor all help give it the bright cartoon feel and it even has Maggies high chair in the corner. The stairs have some good touches like the hard hat and jacket from Homers work and of course the mandatory picture frames of the family.
Apparently the house was built for a mere $120,000, which seems like a pretty good price considering how much would have had to been bespoke built just for the project! It was built by a huge Simpsons fan and was used as a grand prize for a big Pepsi and Fox competition. I would have loved to have won this!
Folding Floor Furniture

Over on Wired today I came across an awesome rug/furniture/sofa/table concept by a Kyoto student Shin Yamashita, it is basically a series of insulated comfortable floor tiles that can be folded and popped up to form a whole variety of tables, seats, even sofas if you put a row of backs up! Basically this is a piece of furniture that is so versatile you could have a blank room with nothing in it but a TV on the wall and this tiled ‘rug’ and then when you need to sit down you pull up a side and take a seat but if you want to have an empty room to host a big party in then just put a couple blocks up as tables and you are done!
I really hope this goes into production because I really need one of these in my life!
Oh and it also has the rather rubbihs name of a ‘Land Peel’…
