Architecture Of London – Tower Bridge

London Thames Sunset panorama Feb 2008 630x234 Architecture Of London – Tower Bridge

Tower Bridge is one of London’s most famous landmarks and is one of the most recognisable bridges in the world. It was built in 1894 and is the only bridge on the River Thames that can be raised. The middle part can be raised and lowered by massive engines in just over a minute, which is no mean feat considering each half costs about 1000 tons! The bridge used to be raised about 50 times a day to let big vessels through but now only gets used 4 or 5 times a week.

Everyone knows the old urban legend of Robert McCulloch, who was supposedly duped into buying the old London Bridge in 1968, after he mistakenly thought he was buying Tower Bridge instead.

Construction of Tower Bridge started in 1886 and took a 8 years to finish and the specs sound just insane. The piers that are sunk into the riverbed as a basis for the construction is made up of over 70,000 tons of concrete and the framework alone has over 11,000 tons of steel in it. The overall cost of construction was about £1,184,000, which in today’s terms would be over £100 million!

It is an amazing and well known bridge and just adds another reason why you should get a flight to London to check the place out. It is one of the greatest cities and you could do a lot worse than get on a flight to the UK for a brilliant long weekend holiday!

When Money Gets In The Way

Do you know how awesome my house would be if I had endless supplies of money in my savings account? It would be more awesome than anyone could possibly comprehend! People would walk into my house and their heads would literally explode and just how cool it was inside.

As it happens though I don’t even have a savings account to put savings in and my current account is in the minus numbers already. Therefore my house is  not awesome and it does not make peoples heads explode sadly. If anyone feels the need to start a savings account in my name and feed money into it feel free, I promise I will let you see all the amazing stuff I buy with the money…

Anyway the reason I say this is because I found the most awesome chair ever today. I love the style of fighter planes and hot rods and I found a chair that was inspired by World War II Bombers and the sheet steel and rivets look that they are famous for. It wouldn’t fit in with many rooms especially if they are a bit more on the ‘cosy’ side but I would happily dedicate a whole room to sheet steel and pop rivets styling just to get this.

The reason I am sad though… It cost’s a pretty hefty $1295 for one single chair and that’s reduced! If your bank account is a bit fuller than mine you can buy one from Restoration Hardware

Christmas Decoration Win

Ok forgive me for this but I walked into my local supermarket the other day and I saw Christmas had come early in one little corner! An array of reds and greens swamped a little part of an aisle with stuffed Santa teddy bears, hampers full of wine and decorations and little plastic Xmas trees. At first I was obviously a bit confused as the last time I checked it was the beginning of September and I was wearing shorts but then while trying to find a picture of unhappy Christmas to convey my anger at it all, I came across this video of a house and its decorations…

*Child mode* How amazingly cool is that! I want to dedicate a whole room in my house to light shows orchestrated by music. It was so cool I even forgot that I
