Art Legend – Pablo Picasso

One of the most widely recognised artists of the 20th century Pablo Picasso is a true art legend and because of his cubist stylings (a style that he co-founded) he is also, in my eyes, a design legend as well.

Born in Malaga, Spain in 1881 to middle class parents Picasso had a quite obvious step up into the art world than most as he was constantly pushed by his father who was also an artists and art lecturer. He left Spain at the age of 19 to live in Paris – the design capital of the time and that is when he really started to advance in his own style of painting – Cubism. And that is how the world came across such a unique talent and style in a time when the world was in the grip of war and hardship.

My favourite painting that Picasso did was his portrait of Daniel-Henry Kahnweiler from 1910. Picasso has said one of the main reason for his success was Kahnweiler’s love and recognition of his paintings, the picture itself is a crazy mix of what look like seperate images all jumbled and scrambled together. It is hard to believe something this off the wall came out in 1910!
