Camper Van – Tent

Everyone knows the ultimate way to camp is in a mint condition retro VW splitscreen camper van but in the world of used vans the splitscreen or ‘splitty’ as it is commonly known is a rather expensive way to sleep. Prices of them are on a continuous rise with a half decent working example costing more than £12k!

So what are you supposed to do if you love the look of a camper van while you are out at the festivals this year but you just cannot afford that kind of money? Well you get a campervan tent! The tent is a full sized replica of a real van and is officially licenced by Volkswagen.

The tent can sleep 4 people with two separate double rooms but luxury comes at a price, at £299.99 it is not the cheapest tent on the market but can you really put a price on design genius like this? You can get it in yellow, blue or red but it won’t be available until August.

VW Camper Van Advertising

When the humble Volkswagen Camper Van came out it quickly became a big hit with the hippy and surfer communities but in America they had a fight on their hands because the country loved its own ‘domestic’ cars and if they needed a multi seat or big car they got a huge station wagon (basically an estate but in American sizes for any non US readers). To most Americans the camper van looked like a small bus and it wasn’t exactly cool for people to drive around in a bus, so therefore VW had to have a strong marketing force behind them to try and change peoples opinion.

What they ended up with is a series of adverts that play on the fact they are so different and look like a bus. It was a daring series that could have backfired but obviously time has shown that it must have been a good plan because the VW is now one of the most well known used vans around and has an image unlike any other.

The pictures are all from a Flickr group dedicated to collecting old VW adverts. Definitely worth a look through if you like retro advertising.
