The Architecture Of Mumbai

So we have looked at some of the architecture in Dublin, the Cubic Houses of Rotterdam and a few other places and I thought today we would have a look at the fascinating architecture of Mumbai, a city that has equal parts Gothic and Victorian stylings as well as contemporary modern builds and a lot of Art Deco.

Many of the structures, buildings and historical monuments of Mumbai are from the colonial era and it also has the second largest amount of Art Deco buildings in the whole world. The Victorian styles are rife throughout Mumbai with the obvious British influence of the colonial era engrained into the style of the city with Art Deco being the only other major style that is obvious throughout most of the place.

The Art Deco architecture started to develop in the 1930′s and you can recognise it easily with the distinctly angular shaped buildings such as the fantastic Eros Cinema, with its central spire and cream paint. Miami is the only other city in the world that has more Art Deco buildings, something in my opinion, that Mumbai should be very proud of.

Of course religion has played a big part and is definitely one of the reasons most people fly to Mumbai for their holidays. They have most types of religious building with temples, synagogues and baptist churches all contributing to the architecture of the city.

Mumbai really is a spectacular place to visit with an amazing culture that is fabulous to experience up close. For any budding architects it is a great place to go and buff up on your different styles and to get ideas for your own designs. If I could afford flights to Mumbai at the moment I would be back over there in a second it is amazing.

Motorised Sofas – Ultimate Comfy Travel

I remember seeing a motorised sofa on Big Breakfast absolutely years ago so when I saw a link to an article about a couple of Brigham Young University students building one to ride around campus I will admit I giggled to myself.

Apparently the young geniuses quickly built it using a broken electric wheelchair and two twelve volt batteries and started riding the sofa-car around campus, much to the annoyance of campus police who say all motorised vehicles are strictly banned! Spoilsports! Everyone knows sofas won’t do anyone harm it would be like getting run into by a big soft cushion!

They even managed to get on the local news! Good work lads!

Right i’m off to find me an old sofa and a wheelchair…

By the way I would love to know about any other wacky furniture that has been built, someone must have made a motorised bed by now!
